Just some quick pics showing the test version of my tapebow for the piece I am writing for ensemble mosaik for musica viva. Here is how it works: instead of hair, a cassette tape (it could be eventually a VHS tape, that one I am reserving for the upcoming music-theater piece) is attached to the bow. The obvious happens: you can control the speed of playback, and upbow and downbow generate reversed versions of the same audio. It was difficult to find a way to make it reliable: the trick is in how the tape is attached to the bow.
Also very interesting results come when using timecode (serato or ms. piggy) instead of normal audio. That way the bow becomes a controller and it is quite amazing how accurate the timecodes are (serato). But, since this piece is about “the real thing”, it was more interesting to go with the audio version and leave the timecode idea for a new piece.
